elementary OS 5.0
Today marks the day I install elementary OS onto my laptop and give it a fair try. I will use it for one week and each day I will blog about my experiance with it.
My inital throughts is that it’s going to be a pretty simple distro which might be a bad thing for me, since I use distros such as Arch where I have full control over what I can do. It will be nice not having to set everything up and just use my laptop though.
Downloading elementary OS is an easy as going to https://elementary.io/ and clicking the “Purchase elementary OS” button??
Oh nevermind I have to enter in 0 to get the free download. I can understand why they put this here, but it doesn’t really sit right with me.
The ISO is 1.4GB which seems to be the average ISO size for a distribution these days, and when they are around this size you normally don’t get a bunch of bloatware which is nice.
The install is pretty straight forward and you are installing in a matter of seconds, so for a beginner to Linux this would be a nice experiance as all you need to do is click ‘Next’ a few times, confirm you langauge and user account, setup your Network connect and you are all done.
You can also setup manual partitions if you wanted that extra control, or if you have multple drives etc. To be honest the install is pretty much the same as Ubuntu \ Mint.
On a SSD and via USB 3.0 and an average internet connection, the install took around 6 minutes to complete.
In the next blog post tomorrow I will look at what apps I will need for my daily activites and what base apps I can use instead.
